There may not have been any controversy in Amanda Nunes’ dominant performance over Raquel Pennington, but that doesn’t mean there was none surrounding UFC 224’s main event on Saturday night.
As the fight headed into the fifth and final round, Pennington had shown little to trouble the champion, and had apparently reached the end of her effort. As she sat in the corner, Pennington told her teammates that she ‘wanted to be done’, only for them to convince her to fight on.
When she did, Nunes ended up cutting Pennington, before taking her to the canvas and firing heavy shots to end the fight. Because of that interaction, fans and fellow fighters took to social media to criticise Pennington’s team, once again raising the issue that cornermen in mixed martial arts appear unwilling to throw in the towel.
“I’m done!”
Corner: “No, no, no, no.”
