The UFC welterweight division has been in need of resolution ever since the first bout between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson from UFC 205 was called a majority draw by the cage-side judges last November in New York. On March at UFC 209, the two fighters will get a do-over and both are keen to show that they are the rightful champion at 170-pounds.

With the not insignificant challenge of Demian Maia waiting patiently in the wings for whoever wins (and the likes of Robbie Lawler, Gunnar Nelson and Neil Magny watching with vested interest), the winner will have a very large target painted on their back once the division hits full steam again.

Stephen Thompson, once again the challenger to Woodley’s welterweight crown, hasn’t had an easy path to UFC title contention. ‘Wonderboy’ faced the likes of Robert Whittaker, Jake Ellenberger, Johny Hendricks and Rory MacDonald on his journey to the title shot. All of them were impressive victories but perhaps none more so than that of his win over MacDonald last June, where Thompson’s elusive striking game proved too much for the Canadian fighter.
