In a little over a week’s time, UFC middleweight stalwart Paulo Costa seeks to re-establish his title credentials at 185-pounds.
The Brazilian, 33, loser of three of his past four fights, will take on the former middleweight champion Sean Strickland at the UFC 302 event in Newark, New Jersey on the main card of an event headlined by Dustin Poirier’s title challenge against Islam Makhachev.
In Strickland, Costa will take on one of the organisation’s most impressive pressure fighters — a style that Costa has struggled against in defeats to Marvin Vettori and, to some extend at least, another ex-champ, Robert Whittaker.
But when Costa is able to dictate tempo, such as he did in his comprehensive decision win agains Luke Rockhold 18 months ago, he is one of the tougher nuts to crack in the deep, talent-filled ranks at 185.
