Well it wasn’t quite as easy as everyone predicted, but Fabricio Werdum walked out of the UFC Octagon in Sydney, Australia a winner.
Werdum faced off with Marcin Tybura in the main event, after being a late notice replacement for Mark Hunt, who was pulled from the fight after controversially revealing he was feeling symptoms of a life of fighting. And while Tybura put up a better fight than perhaps fans and bookies were giving him credit for, Werdum proved his skill level in the end.
Realistically, the entire contest was an opportunity to show Werdum’s experience and maturity. Far from the one dimensional jiu-jitsu fighter that he once was, Werdum used his striking to establish control of the Octagon, and push the younger Tybura back. Add into that, that Tybura appeared to truly respect the Brazilian — offering him fist touches a-plenty — and it made the former heavyweight champion look the more dominant.
