Conor McGregor says he has begun his recovery following successful surgery to repair the knee injury he suffered in his fight with Max Holloway at UFC 329.
The former two-weight UFC champion injured his right knee with the opening kick of the bout and was subsequently diagnosed with tears to both his ACL and meniscus. McGregor has now undergone surgery and faces a rehabilitation period before a potential return to competition.
“Surgery done. Knee repaired,” McGregor wrote on social media. “The doubters can keep talking. I didn’t run from the pain. I walked straight into it. Now the real work begins. Comeback season starts now. No shortcuts. No excuses. Just the will to rise again.”
“The Mac is back, baby,” McGregor added in the video. “My knee is repaired. Surgery was a success, and I am on the road to recovery. That should tell you everything you need to know about my mindset. Straight into surgery. Knee repaired. And on the road [to recovery]. Let’s go.” McGregor also pointed to former UFC champions Dominick Cruz and Georges St-Pierre, as well as NFL great Tom Brady, as examples of athletes who have returned from serious knee injuries. “These are my motivation here, especially the fighting boys,” he added. “Unstoppable, baby. My mindset is unstoppable, unbreakable.”
McGregor will now focus on rehabilitation, with an ACL injury typically requiring a lengthy recovery before a return to full competition. His future beyond that remains uncertain, with the Holloway bout leaving him with one fight remaining on his current UFC contract.
The 38-year-old has not indicated when he expects to compete again or who he could face in his final contracted UFC appearance. For the immediate future, his attention remains on recovering from surgery, along with deciding what to do with the mohawk he wore for UFC 329. “I’m gonna do something about this hair, I’m not sure what just yet,” he said.
