‘Super’ Sage Northcutt has a new opponent at UFC 214 after it was announced by the promotion that Canadian lightweight John Makdessi will step in for the injured Claudio Puelles for the July 29th card in Anaheim, California.
Makdessi was last seen in the cage last December losing via highlight reel wheel kick KO to Lando Vannata last December in what was his fourth loss in his last six UFC outings. Northcutt, meanwhile, returns to the 155-pound fold after losing at 170-pounds to Mickey Gall, also last December, though the 21-year-old remains unbeaten through three fights in the UFC’s lightweight division.

The Northcutt vs. Makdessi bout adds another interesting wrinkle to a UFC 214 which is fast becoming the promotion’s tentpole summer event. It will be headlined by the grudge rematch between current light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former champion Jon Jones.
Also featured on the card will be the match between Cris Cyborg and Megan Anderson for the once again vacant women’s featherweight title, while fascinating bouts between Aljamain Sterling and Renan Barao as well as Jimi Manuwa vs. Volkan Oezdemir are also on tap.
UFC 214 takes place at the Honda Centre in Anaheim, California, on July 29th.
