With the rumoured Darren Till vs. Stephen Thompson bout set to sit atop the UFC’s debut event in Liverpool on May 27th, another top welterweight clash looks set to take place on the main card after reports emerged that the UFC is targeting a bout between 170-pounders Gunnar Nelson and Neil Magny.
The news was first reported by MMA journalist Farrah Hannoun. Magny announced on his personal Instagram account that he has signed a bout agreement and that news of his next fight will be officially announced soon. Official confirmation from the UFC is expected soon.
Nelson (16-3-1) hasn’t competed since a controversial knockout loss at the hands of Santiago Ponzinibbio in July of last year. Instant replay appeared to show Nelson suffered as many as four eye-pokes throughout the brief bout, though no measures were taken post-fight to amend the result of the fight despite an appeal.
Magny (20-6), meanwhile, last competed in December where he defeated Carlos Condit via lopsided unanimous decision. Prior to that, Magny was submitted by Rafael Dos Anjos, won a decision against Johny Hendricks and was TKO’d by Lorenz Larkin taking his recent UFC record to 2-2 in his last four bouts.
UFC Liverpool will take place on May 27th from the Echo Arena.
