The UFC’s debut event in Liverpool has secured one hell of a main event.

After much speculation it has been confirmed that Darren Till and Stephen Thompson, two of the welterweight division’s most potent strikers, will meet in a five-round main event in the Echo Arena on May 27th.

Official confirmation of the bout came via the UFC social media team this afternoon.

Darren Till, a native of Liverpool, has become one of the 170-pound division’s most talked about fighters after a first round stoppage of veteran Donald Cerrone in Poland last October. Since that victory Till has been vocal in his desire to bring the UFC to his hometown, a wish which was granted by the UFC brass.

In Thompson, a two-time title challenger at 170-pounds, Till will meet his sternest test yet in his professional career. A world class kickboxer who has also developed a multi-faceted mixed martial arts game, Thompson last competed at UFC 217 in Madison Square Garden in November where he earned a unanimous decision victory against Jorge Masvidal.

The match-up between the two expert stand-up artists is a fascinating contest, with the winner set to be on the bring of title contention in an ever-developing UFC welterweight division.

Yesterday it was announced that Gunnar Nelson will face Neil Magny in the co-main event, while Michael Bisping is actively campaigning to use the event as the stage for the final bout of his career — though it is understood that a potential Bisping bout is in the very early stages of discussions.

Either way, Liverpool fight fans are in for a treat come the end of May.
