With every gym across the country having closed its doors and our movements severely restricted for the time being, it can be hard to find an exercise routine which works for you while making sure that you observe the government guidelines put in place to help curb the spread of Covid-19.

It is obviously a far from ideal situation and a significant temptation to allow the progress that you have made in recent months to dwindle away as you are become more and more accustomed to your couch during this period of social distancing we all face today, but don’t forget that there are a range of activities you can take part in as you bide your time until the doors of your nearest workout facility open up once again.

Running is obviously one of the easier options but please remember to choose a route in which you will have as minimal contact with passers-by as possible, and to make sure that you don’t move outside the 2km perimeter that we are currently obliged to observe. Another option is body weight exercises, such as chin-ups and pull-ups, press-ups and sit-ups and the many other techniques you can employ from inside your home.

As Conor McGregor stated in a video released Friday evening to the Irish public: “Now more than ever we must abide by this and I pray for the health and safety of our country that we do. The fate of our lives and the lives of our loved ones depends on it. Together we must encourage home workouts and we must encourage healthy, immune-boosting nutrition plans.

“We have incredible experts on this island to aid us here and I urge all to come forward and promote their ways. We need meal plans, as well as the necessary vitamins we should be taking to boost our immune systems. We need small space exercise programs available to the public and we need it for all levels of fitness. I suggest body weight work, the need for no equipment. There are amazing workouts to be had here. Plan your workout, put your music on and give it your absolute all.

“While we remain distant and in isolation, we must still remain active. We must remain active and we must equip our immune systems to operate at their absolute best. Correct nutrition and good physical activity is how we do it.”

So remember: stay active, stay fit, stay healthy and, most importantly, stay safe.
