Demetrious Johnson will attempt to place his name in the history books at UFC Fight Night Canvas when he defends his flyweight title against Brazilian submission artist Wilson Reis. Another successful defense for Johnson would be his tenth in a row, tying the title defense record the legendary Anderson Silva earned in his run as the promotion’s middleweight kingpin.
But for Johnson, drawing even with Silva is just the next step on his path to becoming one of the most dominant fighters in UFC history.
“Ten is just a stepping stone. The ultimate goal is 11”, Johnson said to MMAFighting during a media conference earlier this week. “It’s like Floyd Mayweather when he got to 49-0. It’s like, why would you stop there? You can easily get to 50-0 and be the only fighter to ever do it. I’m going past it. My goal is to go past 10.”
‘Mighty Mouse’ is currently tied with Georges St-Pierre in the all-time title defense record and he knows that two more wins will be enough to guarantee him something that no one else has achieved it the near 25 year history of the UFC. Reis, though, comes into the bout in career best form and poses legitimate questions to Johnson but, so far at least, he has come through every test with more than flying colours.
The weigh-ins for Saturday’s event, which also features clashes between Michelle Waterson and Rose Namajunas, as well as ‘Jacare’ Souza vs. Robert Whittaker took place in Kansas on Friday and you can watch it in full below.
