Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will finally meet in an all-British heavyweight clash at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on December 11, with the long-awaited contest to be broadcast globally on Netflix.

The former two-time heavyweight world champions had signed contracts earlier this year, but a date and venue had remained unresolved. Wembley Stadium and Madison Square Garden had been considered before Cardiff emerged as the host, with the fight promoted in collaboration between Turki Alalshikh’s The Ring and UFC boss Dana White.

“Two of the best heavyweights of this generation, finally in the ring together,” said Alalshikh. “This will be one of the biggest fights in boxing history. I am very happy to make this fight happen for the fans.”

Joshua, 36, welcomed confirmation of the bout with a brief message on social media. “I am inspiring a generation,” Joshua posted on Instagram, while Fury, 38, has yet to publicly comment on the announcement at the time of writing. Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn also thanked British supporters after his fighter secured his preference for the contest to take place in the UK. “Forever indebted to the UK public for their support of Anthony Joshua. We couldn’t have got this over the line without you,” said Hearn.

Joshua and Fury will come face-to-face at a press conference in London on September 30 as preparations for the fight begin. Organisers are also considering a late start to accommodate audiences in the United States, which could see the main event take place in the early hours of the following morning in the UK.

The fight brings an end to years of unsuccessful attempts to match two of Britain’s most prominent heavyweights. A two-fight agreement was discussed in 2020 before plans for an undisputed title fight collapsed the following year following Deontay Wilder’s successful arbitration case against Fury. Another attempt in 2022, when Joshua agreed to a 60-40 split to challenge Fury, also failed to produce a fight.
