Justin Gaethje believes Ilia Topuria is undersized for the UFC lightweight division following his title-winning victory over the former champion at UFC White House.

Gaethje stopped Topuria to claim the lightweight championship and hand the Georgian-Spaniard the first defeat of his professional MMA career. Topuria has since accused Gaethje of loading his gloves for the fight, an allegation the 37-year-old dismissed during an appearance on the FLAGRANT podcast, as noted by MMA Fighting.

“He honestly has to believe that I cheated, because if not, how could you do it again? I broke his face,” said Gaethje. “I don’t think he’s a lightweight. I think he should go down. I think he can beat [Alexander] Volkanovski and be champion at featherweight. I don’t think he’ll ever be champion at lightweight.”

Gaethje also pointed to several of the division’s leading contenders as difficult matchups for Topuria. “He can’t beat Arman [Tsarukyan]. He’s going to have a difficult time with Paddy [Pimblett],” said Gaethje. “I think he’s undersized for lightweight. That’s what I felt.”

Topuria, who won and defended the UFC featherweight title before moving to 155-pounds and knocking out Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight belt, is seeking an immediate rematch. Gaethje, however, said he has yet to decide whether he will continue fighting and intends to spend the remainder of the year recovering before making a decision on his future.

“I do not feel like I have anything left to prove,” said Gaethje. “My first fight was in ‘08. I’m 37 years old. But I know that I also just performed better than I’ve ever performed, so I’m stuck in between a rock and a hard place.” Should he continue, Gaethje acknowledged Tsarukyan as the leading contender for his title. “If and when I defend this championship, that will be who I fight,” he said. “I’m going to enjoy being champion the rest of the year. I’m going to make a business decision and a life decision whenever the time comes.”
