Chris Eubank Jr scored a measure of revenge against rival Liam Smith in Manchester on Saturday night but his trainer, Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre, has landed in some hot water in the hours afterwards.
Eubank Jr easily bested Smith throughout their clash on Saturday night, beating his opponent to the punch throughout the one-sided fight before it was called off in the tenth round, just nine months from Smith’s fourth-round TKO win against him in the same venue in January.
However, reports emerging on Monday have suggested that his McIntyre was detained by authorities at Manchester Airport on Sunday morning after a firearm was discovered in his suitcase as he checked in for a flight to Atlanta, Georgia. Reports have also indicated that the firearm was loaded with ammunition, and that a magazine cartridge was also discovered.
According to Sky Sports, armed police were alerted to the incident and McIntyre was arrested inside the departures lounge at Manchester Airport’s terminal two.
“At around 10:45 am on Sunday 3 September 2023, officers were called to reports of a possible firearm being found in hold luggage by airport staff at Manchester Airport,” a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said. “After initial inspection by security staff, GMP officers attended, and the firearm was seized.
“Subsequently, a man has been arrested for possession of a firearm and remains in custody for further questioning.”
Eubank Jr’s team have not yet commented on the incident. McIntyre is also the trainer to one of the sport’s top pound-for-pound fighters, Terence Crawdord.
