An oft-overlooked element to this weekend’s massive UFC 229 main event clash between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov is the trickles of support that McGregor enjoys in his opponent’s native land.

Russia is an incredibly diverse country and while Nurmagomedov has considerable support in great swathes of the country, some Russians will indeed be cheering for his opponent this weekend.

This sentiment was on display last weekend during a soccer match in the Russian Premier League between Zenit St. Petersburg and Anzhi Makhachkala, the team who play their home games in the Dagestani capital.

In an attempt to goad their rivals Zenit fans chanted ‘Conor McGregor’ at the opposition fans and, if the fight week thus far in Las Vegas is anything to go by, the cheers for the Irishman will far outstrip those of the Russian.
