The long awaited renewal of the GhostBusters franchise is finally happening, but many fans are horrified at the changes; particularly the new all female twist on the GhostBusters. (Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones)
Director Paul Feig has been shocked by some of what he describes as: “some of the most vile, misogynistic sh** I’ve ever seen in my life.” It does seem that the age old addage of the internet bringing out the worst in people has come to the fore again, especially with young males who seem to be vehemently opposed to the idea of an all female cast, posting gems such as:
There are the occasional positive comment about the reboot, however much of it is more a commentary on the aesthetics of the cast rather than on the merits of the film itself.
So what’s my opinion? The film looks like an interesting take on an old classic. Do I think it will be as good as the original? No; nostalgia makes it so that things seldom are. Do I think it is well cast? Yes; for the tone of the film that they are clearly trying to achieve, it has been strongly cast, with great actors in the roles of the GhostBusters. Do I think it will do well at box office? Yes; there is no such thing as bad press, and with 20M views on the trailer in just 4 days I think it is safe to say that love it or hate it, it’s happening. It would be childish to dismiss it from seeing just 2 minutes of footage.
Closing words: Things change; they have to. The batman movies got darker and they got better. Liam Neeson kept losing his damn daughter, and the movies got worse. Re-releasing the same old format just because it is easy or safe means that the film industry will never grow. It’s how we ended up with 8 different American Pie movies, let’s not repeat the pattern.
