Bo Nickal didn’t quite see his UFC 309 win over Paul Craig through the same lens as Daniel Cormier.

Nickal extended his career record to a perfect 7-0 with a unanimous decision victory over Scotland’s Paul Craig inside Madison Square Garden late on Saturday night in what was the first bout of the former standout Penn State wrestler to have gone the distance. The fight was billed as a battle between Nickal’s dominant style of American wrestling with Craig’s savvy submission game — but was instead largely a stand-up affair throughout the 15 minutes during which Nickal fought somewhat conservatively en route to what was a clear-cut win on the cards.

UFC commentator Daniel Cormier who, of course, comes from an extensive grappling background of his own, was somewhat critical of Nickal’s performance, suggesting on the broadcast that Nickal could have moved into a new gear and finish the fight if he has the desire to — and speaking Ariel Helwani on Monday, Nickal outlined that he was disappointed with Cormier’s perspective on his performance.

“When I watched the fight back, something that was a little disappointing was the commentary and just kinda hearing the way they were looking at the fight,” he said, as noted by BJPenn.com.

“It made me feel like they didn’t really know what was going on. Anybody that I’ve talked to, the people that I trust and shoot straight with me, they’re like ‘Dude, you shut that guy out, total domination, it was a flawless victory.”

He added: “To hear things like ‘DC’ say, ‘Oh, he’s not ready for Khamzat’ — I think he was trying to be respectful, but also trying to like, I dunno, maybe set me down a peg.

“It was just weird to hear. But I just feel like that people that I know, that are in my corner and would give me honest, genuine feedback, they’re very happy with the victory. I was very happy with the victory, so that’s what I really care about at the end of the day. But it was a little disappointing to hear some of those comments from people I respect a lot.”
