Brandon Moreno is happy to take the scenic route back to UFC flyweight title contention.
The Mexican two-time former 125-pound champion snapped a two-fight skid at the UFC’s event in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on Saturday night, dispatching the 17-1 Iraqi contender Amir Albazi in a lopsided five-round decision. The win erased, somewhat at least, the memory of two successive split decision losses to Brandon Royval and the reigning champ Alexandre Pantoja — and if Moreno is to work his way back to a fight with the Brazilian, he believes that one more win might get him there.
“I want to be honest with myself, I think, maybe, I have to fight one more time before the title,” Moreno told reporters in Canada following his win over Albazi late on Saturday night, as noted by MMA Fighting.
“But I don’t know what the UFC is thinking right now. Maybe they got so impressed with the performance tonight and say, ‘Maybe he can get the title next.’ I know [Brandon] Royval is there. Kai Kara-France is trying to get the opportunity for the title next. So, I don’t know. I’ll be ready for whatever.”
Such has been Moreno’s activity in recent years, he has faced a who’s-who of flyweight contenders — many of whom more than once — and as such, some paths back to the number one contendership are more attractive than others.
“I can get [a rematch] with Royval,” he said. “I don’t want to fight with Kai again because I fought him twice and I beat him, but if I have to do that… Tatsuro Taira is there. Kai Asakura, let’s see what happens there against Pantoja. If he loses, that can be the next one.”
