When it comes to the year-end lists you’ll see in the next few days to mark the most spectacular moments of 2022, Conor McGregor says that there is one fight which overrules all of the others.

With less than a minute left on the clock in the August rematch between former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards, the Briton was down on the scorecards and facing his first defeat in seven years (since his last meeting with Usman). But then it happened: a left high kick disguised behind a pawing jab which connected flush on that sweet spot between Usman’s neck and jaw, collapsing him to the canvas for his first-ever loss inside a UFC cage.

And as far as McGregor is concerned, it isn’t just comeback of the year or knockout of the year, it is the EVERYTHING of the year.

Both Edwards and Usman had been expected to complete their trilogy at the recently-announced UFC event to take place in London in March, though recent indications have placed the fight in doubt given that Usman remains in recovery from hand surgery, and there are suggestions that he may not be fit to compete by mid-March.

It remains to be seen if the UFC will seek a new opponent for Edwards in that case, but the card is likely going to be without Molly McCann, perhaps Paddy Pimblett and most likely Tom Aspinall — leaving the UFC with a few holes to plug from a matchmaking perspective.
