Colby Covington heard Kamaru Usman making demands of him, and apparently didn’t appreciate it.

With the welterweight champion Usman preparing for a grudge match with Jorge Masvidal, Covington has made it clear he fully intends on waiting to fight the winner, feeling as if he deserves a title shot already. In Usman’s mind, Covington can sit and wait all he wants, he won’t be getting gifted a chance at his belt just for demanding it.

“Show me some activity. Give me a reason,” Usman said, speaking with ESPN. “… It’s time for him to show the people that he deserves another chance to fight for the title. You can’t sit back and say, ‘Oh, I beat Tyron Woodley. That’s it. I deserve a shot at the title.’ No. That doesn’t give you a shot at the title.”

Upon hearing the comments, Covington was obviously displeased, and took to his social media to accuse Usman of intentionally avoiding a rematch with him.

“Spoken like a true coward who doesn’t want to face the rightful #1 contender,” Covington wrote. “The rankings have chosen and so have the people Marty. Just say the truth: you know you can’t win and you’d rather fight bums like Street Judas for easy pay checks.”

Covington and Usman first fought in December of 2019. Usman won the contest via TKO in the fifth round.
