They can’t all be home runs.

Despite the creation of a new title the UFC’s second visit to New York City on Saturday night didn’t have the same history-making ramifications as its first back in November of last year. Germaine de Randamie was (somewhat controversially) crowned the organisation’s first women’s featherweight champion when she outpointed Holly Holm over five rounds — despite a pair of ‘after the bell’ shots from the Dutchwoman which some referees may have deemed worthy of striking a point from her scorecard.

de Randamie won the contest by a score of three rounds to two, consigning Holly Holm to her third successive defeat and placing her very much at a crossroads of her career.

Elsewhere on the card, Anderson Silva was given a narrow decision victory over Derek Brunson in a fight which could well have been awarded to the American, while Jacare Souza scored the night’s only submission — a textbook first round kimura against Tim Boetsch. In the best fight on the main card, Dustin Poirier rebounded from a loss to Michael Johnson last September, winning an excellent back and forth brawl with Jim Miller.

Despite the action, Dana White wasn’t impressed with the card and in particular called attention to what he deemed poor performances from the officials appointed by the New York Athletic Commission.

“I feel that the ref from New York shouldn’t be ref-ing a main event fight. They don’t have enough experience. He should not have been in there. But again, we don’t make those decisions — the commission does. That was a bad decision by them. If that guy takes a point for hitting after the bells, it’s a draw”, White said of the controversial decision in the main event.

“[That’s] the only possible way this night could be any more [expletive]”, White joked.
