With the greatest of respect to Matt Hamill, it is widely regarded that Jon Jones has never legitimately lost a professional fight.

His first fight with Alexander Gustafsson all the way back in September 2013 is about as close as he has come. The back-and-forth five round war that headlined UFC 165 in Toronto, Canada was up to that by the toughest test of Jones’ career — by far. Jones, who was defending his 205-p0und title against the Swede, sustained a bad cut in the first round and was also taken down in the first frame by Gustafsson, who became the first fighter to bring the American to the canvas in his career.

In the end, it was Jones who was handed a razor-close unanimous decision win in what he called the toughest fight he had ever had — and the winner of 2013’s ‘Fight of the Year’.

Some 11 years later, Jones will be looking to add more weight to his legacy when he battles Stipe Miocic in defence of his UFC heavyweight title in the UFC 309 main event on November 16 from New York’s Madison Square Garden.

But before that, see below to re-experience the classic first fight between him and Alexander Gustafsson.
