Well, this is a new one.

The often unusual world of mixed martial arts has shown us some unconventional training techniques over the years (especially if you’re familiar with that Diego Sanchez/Joshua Fabia scandal from a couple of years ago) — but we can’t say we’ve quite ever seen anything like this before.

Days out from his middleweight title defence against Israel Adesanya which tops this weekend’s UFC 305 card from Perth, Australia, South Africa’s Dricus du Plessis has revealed that his coach, Morne Visser, can sometimes harness the effects of a taser with which to make his point in the training room — and particularly so if he feels a lesson isn’t quite being taken on board by one of his fighters.

Check out the footage below.

“This is my assistant coach,” Visser says in the video, thanks to the SpinninBackfist Twitter channel, referring to a taser he holds in his hand.

So if he f***ed up, I helped him fix the problem. This is fixing the problem. Light on his toes, not picking up his hands, not kicking when he needs to. So, I’ll fix him, yeah.”

Du Plessis adds of the extra motivation brought on by the taser: “It’s a very cool mental note. It’s a lot better than a stickie note, I can tell you that.”
