Joanna Jedrzejczyk has been dethroned as the UFC strawweight champion of the world.
In an absolutely stunning turn of events, underdog Rose Namajunas defeated Jedrzejczyk in the first round of their 115-pound title fight. While many had speculated Jedrzejczyk’s striking would be one of the defining areas of the contest, it was actually Namajunas’ ability on the feet that stunned the champion, knocking her to the floor once, and then again before the finish came.
It was a big left hand that dropped the champion, before Namajunas followed up with a huge barrage on the floor that had Jedrzejczyk completely rattled, before she eventually tapped to the strikes.
It’s one of the most impressive underdog victories in recent memory, with Namajunas having being pegged as something of a routine — if game — title defence for Jedrzejczyk to equal Ronda Rousey’s pioneering title run.
