Interim titles certainly appear to be in vogue at the moment.

Yesterday, it was announced that former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos and Robbie Lawler, himself a former champion in the 170-pound fold will meet in the main event of a UFC on FOX event in Winnipeg on December 15th.

Dos Anjos, who is 2-0 at welterweight since making the move north from 155-pounds, wasted little time in calling for the bout to be upgraded to that of an interim title bout given, as the Brazilian suggests, current undisputed champion Tyron Woodley likely won’t compete again until 2018.

However, as you might have expected Woodley isn’t terribly fond of the idea and responded quickly with a tweet of his own.

Woodley has been welterweight champion since his upset first round knockout win against Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 in July 2016. Since then Woodley has fought three times; a draw and win against Stephen Thompson and followed that up with a clinical shutdown of Demian Maia on July 29th of this year.

Given that it’s barely been three months since Woodley defended his title, we don’t think Dos Anjos’ request will be granted. Still though, stranger things and all that…
