UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz says he is continuing to recover from a serious boating accident that left him unconscious and dealing with lasting health issues, describing the incident as “the worst accident of my life.”

The former UFC light heavyweight champion revealed details of the accident in a social media post on Monday, explaining that he was thrown from a boat travelling at approximately 55 mph before landing in the water and losing consciousness. Ortiz said the ordeal occurred 11 weeks ago and nearly cost him his life.

“I was thrown from a boat traveling approximately 55 [miles per hour] and launched nearly 10 feet into the air. I was knocked unconscious and woke up 10 feet underwater,” said Ortiz on Instagram. “When I surfaced, the boat was over 100 yards away. As I floated there, trying to understand what had happened, I realised how close I had come to losing my life.”

Ortiz said the recovery process has been difficult, with lingering symptoms affecting multiple areas of his life. “The headaches, face pain, body pain, and memory loss that followed have been unlike anything I’ve ever experienced,” said Ortiz. “For nearly two months after the accident, much of my memory was gone. Even now, pieces are slowly starting to come back.” He added that the injury had impacted his health, personal life and business interests.

The 51-year-old also announced that he is scheduled to undergo C3-C4 disc replacement surgery next week as part of his ongoing recovery. “My hope is that this procedure will finally relieve the pain and help me continue the road to recovery,” said Ortiz. “I’m not done fighting. This is just another challenge to overcome.”

Ortiz did not provide a timetable for his recovery beyond the upcoming procedure. He said he remains grateful for the support he has received and believes surviving the accident has given him a renewed appreciation for life. “I truly believe I was given a second chance,” said Ortiz. “Every day since that accident has been a reminder of how precious life is and how quickly everything can change.”

A member of the UFC Hall of Fame’s Pioneer Wing, Ortiz was one of the promotion’s earliest stars and held the UFC light heavyweight title from 2000 to 2003, recording five successful title defences. He built notable rivalries with fellow MMA pioneers Chuck Liddell and Ken Shamrock, while his most recent combat sports appearance came in September 2021 when he was knocked out by Anderson Silva in a boxing match.
