Merab Dvalishvili has vowed to return to the Octagon following his defeat to Petr Yan at UFC 333 on Saturday night, insisting that he remains healthy and motivated despite failing to reclaim the UFC bantamweight title.
The Georgian was beaten by unanimous decision after five rounds against Yan, suffering his second consecutive defeat to the Russian following a remarkable run of 14 straight victories that included three successful defences of the 135-pound championship.
“I cannot wait to be back in that cage doing what I love to do!” Dvalishvili wrote in a statement posted to X. “I am healthy and motivated and will be back soon! This Machine never breaks! See you all soon.”
Dvalishvili also expressed his gratitude to those who supported him throughout his preparations, thanking his cornermen, training partners and coaches in Las Vegas and New York. “Last but certainly not least – my family, friends and fans – your support and love means the world to me!” he wrote.
The 35-year-old had enjoyed a promising start to the contest, using his trademark pressure, takedown attempts and striking output to keep Yan occupied in the opening rounds. However, the Russian gradually took control, successfully defending Dvalishvili’s wrestling attacks while finding increasing success on the feet to secure the judges’ decision.
Dvalishvili has not indicated when he expects to compete again, but his latest statement suggests that he has no intention of taking an extended break following the defeat. The former champion will now look to rebuild momentum in a division in which he had previously established himself as one of the UFC’s most dominant competitors.
