Conor McGregor has outlined a long-term plan to face Max Holloway for a third time, saying he wants the rematch to serve as the final fight of his current Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) contract during International Fight Week in 2027.
McGregor revealed his intentions in an Instagram post on Monday, less than three weeks after suffering a technical knockout defeat to Holloway at UFC 329 in Las Vegas. The Dubliner was sustained an injury on an early kick and is expected to undergo surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
“What was to be a generational beating is now to be reset. IFW 2027. The Last Dance,” said McGregor, according to his Instagram post.
The proposed bout would be the third meeting between the two fighters. McGregor defeated Holloway by unanimous decision in August 2013 before their second bout recently. UFC president Dana White also provided an update on McGregor’s recovery, saying, “Conor McGregor’s out for a year,” according to comments made on Sunday.
McGregor’s recovery from knee surgery is expected to determine when he can return to competition, with the timeline suggested by White making a 2027 rematch a realistic target. If the fight takes place, McGregor has indicated it would be the final contest under his current UFC agreement.
The defeat to Holloway was McGregor’s first appearance in the Octagon in five years.
