Sean Brady isn’t giving up his spot.
The Philly native has experienced defeat on just one occasion in his professional career, with that coming against the current UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad in October 2022, and had appeared to be on the doorstep of an opportunity at revenge after a March submission victory against Leon Edwards — in which he became the first fighter to defeat ‘Rocky’ inside the distance.
However, things move fast in the UFC and this is something that Ian Machado Garry can attest to. The Irishman had appeared to drop a few rungs on the 170-pound contendership ladder with a December loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov (his first career defeat, incidentally) — with the Kazakh named as top contender to fight Muhammad.
But after Shavkat was unable to compete against Muhammad on May 10, that opportunity was instead handed to the Australian Jack Della Maddalena, who has been on a tear at 170 since debuting with the UFC in 2022.
That development, though, didn’t satisfy Machado Garry — who would then re-establish his own title challenge with a conclusive decision win over Carlos Prates in last weekend’s UFC action from Kansas City. And with the Dubliner confirmed as the backup fighter at next month’s UFC 315 — a situation which can traditionally lead to an eventual title shot — Sean Brady says that Garry needs to slow his roll.
“Ian did what Ian does,” Brady said on the BradyBagz Show, as noted by Sherdog.
“He f*cking touches you and runs for three rounds, then he got beat up for two rounds and said he’s getting a title shot. To say you have a performance like that and you deserve a title shot. He can go weigh in and be the backup fighter all he wants, that don’t mean f*cking dick.
“So Ian just keeps talking about him taking short-notice fights. Cool bro. You did two, you lost one and you almost got finished in the other. That doesn’t mean you deserve a title shot.”
Both Brady and Garry have relative experience in the UFC’s 170-pound fold. Brady has won eight of nine, while Garry has won nine of ten.
