‘King’ Ryan Garcia wants to be the most high profile boxer to try his hand at mixed martial arts.
Several notable names in MMA have made the leap to boxing in recent years, Conor McGregor and Francis Ngannou included, but there hasn’t yet been quite the same appetite from top-level boxers to move in the opposite direction. Perhaps until now.
Ryan Garcia, one of the biggest names in boxing today, takes on Devin Haney in a massive boxing showdown on April 20: a fight in which he will seek to hand Haney his first defeat. But after that? Garcia says that he has his eyes on UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley, and he vows that he would like to see it happen in the Octagon.
“I’ll beat his ass in MMA guaranteed,” Garcia told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, as noted by MMA Fighting. “I’m a natural, you don’t understand. I’m a natural wrestler. I just beat my security that’s a wrestler, I beat him. I’m strong and I’ve got crazy conditioning.”
O’Malley has previously floated the idea of taking on Garcia in a boxing match but Garcia suggested that this would not be a sufficient challenge.
“I know I’m going to knock him out in boxing, that’s not even fair,” Garcia said. “What is fair is to test myself in MMA because I know if I put my mind to it and I trained every day, and I had Nate [Diaz] helping me, even Alex Pereira, all of them, and I really locked in, he will not beat me. I will come with everything I have and I will destroy Sean O’Malley. In the UFC.”
Garcia continued, saying that he has even raised the issue with UFC brass — but has not yet received any form of definitive answer from Dana White or his matchmakers.
“I’ve already sent text messages to Dana,” Garcia said. “I’ve already got people that are connected to Dana to ask him, let’s do this. I’ll come to UFC, pay me a bag, I’m there. I’m down to do it after Devin Haney. All I know is, Dana, hit me back, I’m trying to beat Sean O’Malley’s ass.”
