Reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira could be in line to make his heavyweight debut in the coming months, according to a report from his native Brazil.
Former two division GLORY champion Pereira has matched his achievements in kickboxing in the UFC in recent years, winning gold in both the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions since his debut with the organisation in November 2021.
More recently, Pereira has been linked with a move to heavyweight in a development which could, in theory at least, lead to him becoming the first three-division champion in UFC history.
And he might take his first step in this voyage as soon as March, according to Brazilian reporter Laerte Viana as reported by Forbes.
According to the report, Pereira is being linked to a heavyweight clash with the Russian fighter Alexander Volkov at March’s UFC 313 in Las Vegas in a bout that would presumably serve as the headliner for what is to be the UFC’s third numbered event of 2025.
It was also reported that the winner would be assured of a shot at the heavyweight title after Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall fight later this year. However, Pereira has also been linked to a 205-pound defence against Magomed Ankalaev and even Khamzat Chimaev in upcoming contests.
Volkov most recently fought last month in what was a split decision defeat to Ciryl Gane. However, many observers concluded that Volkov had done enough to win the fight — including UFC CEO Dana White, who told the Russian shortly after the fight that he would work to make it up to Volkov.
