Raoni Barcelos is conscious and responsive in hospital after the Brazilian bantamweight suddenly collapsed during his UFC Vegas 121 main event against Raul Rosas Jr. on Saturday.

The bout came to an abrupt end during a clinch exchange in the fifth round when Barcelos lost consciousness and was immediately attended to before being transported to a Level 1 trauma centre. The UFC later said Barcelos was “stable, alert and responsive, with full movement” following a CT scan and comprehensive assessment.

“Raoni is doing well,” said Barcelos’ head coach Davi Ramos on social media, as noted by MMA Fighting. “He has all his senses, he’s moving his leg, his arm, his hand, he’s conscious, he’s talking, everything is fine with him. He’s undergoing some tests, and pretty soon he’ll be here to talk to you guys.”

Barcelos’ doctor, Dr. Gustavo Medeiros, subsequently provided a further update and said the fighter would remain under observation. “He is lucid and oriented at this moment, and he is hospitalized strictly as a matter of protocol,” said Medeiros. “He needs to remain under observation for a few days to assess his condition and make sure that everything remains stable and that he continues to do well.”

No cause for Barcelos’ collapse has yet been confirmed, with Ramos describing the incident as an unpredictable occurrence in the sport. “We had a great fight,” said Ramos. “We practice a sport that we can’t predict, unfortunately, but we know for sure that we were doing our best.”

Barcelos had been ahead on all three judges’ scorecards entering the fifth round, with one judge awarding him a 10-8 fourth round. He had been a little over three minutes away from securing what would have been his sixth consecutive UFC victory before the contest was stopped.
