Leon Edwards will take a few months off before resuming his hunt to regain the UFC welterweight title, according to his brother.
Edwards suffered his second consecutive defeat in the headline fight of the UFC’s return to London last month, succumbing to a fourth-round guillotine choke at the hands of rising contender Sean Brady.
And according to Fabian Edwards, who fights Impa Kasanganay this week in the quarter-finals of the upcoming PFL middleweight tournament, Leon Edwards is helping him prepare for his fight all while working on adding a few new tricks to his skillset.
“Obviously he’s in training for himself just developing and pushing and fixing whatever he needs to fix and then helping me alongside that. Develop, help me, then look for a fight probably end of the year,” Fabian Edwards said of his brother to Bloody Elbow.
“He’s been around watching my sparring, he’s flown out with me to Florida and he’s alright. He’s around the family and everyone and that’s about it. The UFC has never done us any favours in terms of the match-ups.”
Prior to his defeats against first Belal Muhammad and then Sean Brady, Edwards was in the midst of a 13-fight unbeaten streak but now finds himself in the somewhat unfamiliar position of third in the division, according to the latest iteration of the official UFC rankings.
“[The UFC have] never though ‘OK stylistically, they’re a good matchup for Leon,’ they’ve always thought about it like ‘who can we give him to not have him win?’ They’ve been successful with the last two but we just keep pushing.
“Our coaches just say ‘keep winning, then they can’t deny you’. That’s what he done. He kept winning, got himself a title and defended it. Not many people can say they’ve done that so you can’t erase that from history.”
