UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones says fans can expect a “huge announcement” from him this week.
Jones has been strongly linked to a title bout with the division’s interim champion Tom Aspinall — however the American fighter has on several occasions distanced himself from a bout with the Englishman, suggesting that he would require a bumper, career-high payday to take on the surging Englishman in the cage.
However, fight fans have speculated that Jones could be close to agreeing terms to fight Aspinall after he wrote on social media on Wednesday that a major announcement as to his future is incoming.
“In 24 hours I’ll be making a huge announcement! #Andstill,” the two-division UFC champion wrote on the platform formerly known as Twitter.
It stands to reason that said announcement could be the Aspinall fight but it could also be a variety of other news, such as a sponsorship deal or movie role.
UFC boss Dana White has previously said that he is “100 percent” confident that the Jones-Aspinall bout takes place in 2025 but recently told The Mac Life that Jones would have to be stripped of the title by a certain timeframe if he refuses to agree terms to his next title defence — at which point Aspinall’s title would be upgraded to the real thing.
Jones last fought in November where he defeated former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic by third-round TKO. Aspinall, meanwhile, was last seen in the cage in July where he scored a 60-second TKO win over perennial contender Curtis Blaydes. Following that, Aspinall said that his next fight must be for the undisputed heavyweight championship.
