Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate is making what could be one last run at the title.

Tate, one of the most prominent female fighters in mixed martial arts history, last competed in December 2023 when she scored a third-round submission win over Julia Avila in a fight which ended a run of four defeats from her previous five fights in the Octagon. And at the age of 38, ‘Cupcake’ has confirmed that she will strap on her 4oz gloves once more in May when she fights Yana Santos at a May 3 event rumoured to be taking place in Des Moines, Iowa.

“It’s official: May 3rd vs Yana Santos,” Tate wrote on Instagram. “I’ve still got what it takes and if you doubt me, please stick around. Mark your calendars.”

Santos confirmed the rumour soon after, responding to Tate: “See you soon.” The UFC, meanwhile, has yet to confirm the bout and the event in question.

Tate returned from a near five-year hiatus in 2021 to defeat Marion Reneau via TKO but would then lose successive bouts to Ketlen Viera and Lauren Murphy before her most recent win over Avila.

In her heyday, Tate was best known as a heated rival of Ronda Rousey and would lose twice to the Judoka — once in the UFC and once in Strikeforce.

However, Tate would later claim the UFC’s 135-pound title in March 2016 by defeating Holly Holm by submission in what was Holm’s first title defence after her surprise win over Rousey some months prior.
