UFC contender Reiner de Ridder says he has the tools to solve the middleweight division’s biggest problem.
Newly crowned 185-pound champion Khamzat Chimaev turned in a dominant grappling performance in his UFC 319 title win against Dricus du Plessis, scoring 12 takedowns and setting a UFC record of securing three separate crucifix positions against the South African throughout the 25-minute fight.
Chimaev, though, was unable to find the finish in the five-round contest, and the Dutch submission expert De Ridder says that he has the abilities required to provide a stern test of the Chechen’s grappling credentials.
“I believe I am a very big challenge for him,” De Ridder told Submission Radio, as noted by BJPenn.com.
“I’m interested to see what happens in the fight, of course. If I get taken down, perfect. If I take him down, perfect.”
He added: “If we are still standing, also great. I think I have a good chance of doing well in this fight. And I am really hopeful we can get it done.”
De Ridder entered the UFC as a former two-weight champion at ONE Championship and has won four straight middleweight fights in his new home – including an impressive second-round finish of American wrestling sensation Bo Nickal this past May.
He has also underscored his title ambitions with a split decision win over former champ Robert Whittaker in his most recent fight in July.
De Ridder added that he sees a path to victory no matter where the fight takes place.
“I have some sneaky stuff from the bottom,” he said. “I can really make it hard on him once I put him on the back, I think I have a good chance in this fight.”
And, when pressed if he would be available for a title bout with Chimaev in Abu Dhabi in October, the answer was simple: “100 percent.”
