Ian Machado Garry is no stranger to accepting short notice bouts — and he says this one will display exactly how much of a threat he is in the UFC’s shark-tank welterweight division.
It was confirmed on Tuesday that Dublin native Garry will take on the surging contender Carlos Prates in the UFC’s return to Kansas City on April 26 after a new main event was required due to Jamahal Hill’s withdrawal from the initially scheduled headliner opposite Khalil Rountree.
And in his first comments since the fight was announced, Garry says that Brazil’s Prates is in for a tough night in the Octagon.
“I’m excited,” Garry said in a video posted to Instagram. “Why? The UFC go, ‘Ah, we need someone. Who do we need? Who do we call?’ You call me. Why? Because I’m a real fighter who wants to fight the best in the world. I’m going to show everybody how good I am. Carlos Prates is awesome, but this is my world. I love to fight. There’s nothing more I love in this world than fighting.”
He added: “Kansas City, let’s go. Ireland, get your tickets, get your flights. Brazil, get your tickets, get your flights.”
Prates, 31, has won 11 straight fights (including four on the UFC’s main roster) — with the past ten of this coming by either TKO or KO inside the first two rounds. He was last seen in the cage in November where he scored a first-round knockout win over UFC veteran (and former Garry opponent) Neil Magny.
Garry, meanwhile, fights for the first time since losing a top contender bout against Shavkat Rakhmonov in December in what was the first blemish on his professional fight record.
