Ciryl Gane will look to take a step back to title contention at this week’s UFC 310 in Las Vegas — and much of his motivation is centered around righting the wrongs from his one-sided loss to Jon Jones in March of last year.
Frenchman Gane was submitted by Jones just over two minutes into the first round in a fight to contest the UFC’s then-vacant heavyweight championship in what was his second attempt to win a world title, a platform he hopes to return to this weekend when he rematches Alexander Volkov more than three years after originally scoring a unanimous decision win over the giant Russian.
“When I look back at it, it was obvious that I was not there,” Gane said on the UFC 310 Countdown show of his fight with Jones, as noted by MMA Junkie. “It represented exactly how I felt on the day of the fight. It was a total misunderstanding of what was happening.
“I don’t recognize myself there. It’s something I’ve never done in my life. I’ve never fought that way before. My distance management, my movement, the alertness that I love to show — I had none of that.”
Gane rebounded from that loss to Jones with a second round TKO win over Serghei Spivac in September of last year in his native France and now, many months removed from that loss to the champion, he sees the episode as being a positive for his career.
“Looking back, I think that this experience may have been beneficial,” Gane said. “For me personally, it helped me to refocus on myself. It gave me a spirit of revenge, a competitive spirit.”
Gane gets a chance to showcase this development in Las Vegas late on Saturday night.
