Tom Aspinall will get his wish of a shot at Jon Jones UFC heavyweight title in 2025, at least according to Dana White.
Aspinall has been campaigning for a showdown between the two titleholders since he won an interim version of the UFC heavyweight championship more than a year ago in New York. However, the Englishman was forced to wait on the sidelines (and defend his interim crown this past summer) while the UFC stood firm with their preferred route of a UFC 309 matchup between Jones and the former champion Stipe Miocic.
With that now in the rear-view mirror Jones has refused to commit to a matchup with Aspinall, telling the media in pre-fight last month that he has other preferred options for so-called ‘legacy fights’, including that of the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira.
But according to White, the Jones-Aspinall fight will become a reality in 2025.
“Yeah, I’ll say 100 percent [that it happens in 2025],” White told the media, including The Mac Life, following the UFC’s event in Tampa, Florida on Saturday night. “100 percent. I think it’s probably the biggest fight in heavyweight history, and it’s a massive in the history of the company, too. It’s a big fight.”
White also addressed the suggestions from Jones that he sees more attractive opponents as he winds down his legendary career.
“It’s weird. Let me tell you what’s weird about that. So usually those guys say that shit behind the scenes and not publicly. Jon says that shit publicly but not behind the scenes. Jon is a very unique individual to deal with.
“From day one, I’ve been confident that Jon Jones would do that fight,” White added. “I mean even before the fight, I said if he won, there’s no way Jon doesn’t do this fight. Jon Jones isn’t afraid to fight anybody and that’s a fact.
“Jon Jones behind the scenes is not a guy that turns down fights.”
