In one of the more bizarre stories currently growing in mixed martial arts, Chuck Liddell has responded to Jon Jones after the younger man sent out a number of insulting tweets on social media yesterday.

That’s not to say Jones’ insults were without reason, as the entire affair stemmed from Liddell’s appearance on MMAFighting’s The MMA Hour, where the UFC Hall of Famer said he’d love a chance to face Jones in the cage after a few comeback fights.

“To be honest in my mind I’d like to fight two warm up fights and I’d like a shot at Jon,” Liddell said. “I’m serious. I’d like a shot at him. But we’ll see. Match[-up], styles. … In my prime I would have matched up with him perfect. Right now, I dunno, but I’d like to take a shot at it.

“If we get there, we’ll see. I’ll be evaluating the whole time, but we’ll see.”

After evidently hearing those comments, Jones — who currently sits inactive awaiting a verdict from USADA in regards to a failed drugs test — took to his twitter to lob a few insults in Liddell’s direction.

“Old Chuck has been calling me out for years!” Jones wrote. “I get it, I hold pretty much every record in the division. I normally try to respect my elders but if you want it come get it. I’d literally fly you out to Albuquerque this weekend.”

Well, today Liddell has answered back, responding to a Jones tweet with “I figure it’s a good place for a youngin’ like u to learn from a true legend and champion on how to really fight and conduct your life inside and outside the ring.”

It’s hard to imagine we’ve heard the last of this little feud.
