Alex Pereira says that UFC light heavyweight champion Magomed Ankalaev is struggling for relevancy.
The 33-year-old Russian defeated ‘Poatan’ by unanimous decision this past March, dethroning the former two-division champion in what was the Brazilian’s first-ever defeat in the 205-pound fold.
But as he plots his path back to title contention, Pereira says that Ankalaev’s status as champion in one of the UFC’s traditionally most well regarded divisions has flown under the radar — because no one knows who he is.
“Nobody—not nobody, but hardly someone else does that, four fights in a year. People miss it,” Pereira told UFC Brasil, as noted by MMA Fighting.
“Also, he was promoting a little bit if he says my name, right?” Pereira added. “Because nobody knows he’s champion, right? So when he says my name he gets some attention. But I’m not responding to any of his attacks because I know it’s only for promotion. I’ll talk at the right time.”
And as he hints, that ‘right time’ is fast approaching. Pereira has been known through his brief but incredibly successful UFC run thus far as being one of the most battle-tested competitors on the roster, as evidenced by his 11 fights in the past three-and-a-half years.
“[A rematch] is my focus, that’s what I want, and that will happen,” Pereira said. “I don’t know [when], we haven’t spoken, but around October. It could be September, October, November. It doesn’t matter to me. That date is perfect for me.”
This time around, Pereira said, he will come in to a fight with his Russian rival from a position of experience and will tailor his game for the threat possessed by Ankalaev in their presumptive rematch.
“It’s not like I’ll completely change my game,” he said. “No. It’s the same thing, but fixing some techniques.”
