Alex Pereira says he has designs on regaining the UFC’s middleweight title.

On Saturday night (or Sunday morning, depending on your perspective), South Africa’s Du Plessis scored his first successful title defence, defeating two-time former champion Israel Adesanya in the UFC 305 main event in Perth, Australia.

Afterwards, Du Plessis appeared to identify another ex-champ, Sean Strickland, as his next foil — only for another UFC titleholder to express an interest in a potential bout: the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion (and former 185-pound champ) Alex ‘Poatan’ Pereira.

In the moments after Du Plessis’ win last weekend, a (surprise, surprise) stone-faced Pereira issued an image to social media to indicate that he had been watching the UFC 305 main event, along with the caption: “Coming down to 185 one more time.”

Pereira entered the UFC as a middleweight in November 2021 where he would win his first three bouts before earning a shot at then-champ Adesana, whom he defeated by late TKO to earn his third successive combat sports win over ‘Stylebender,’ with the other two coming in their kickboxing careers.

The Brazilian would next lose his world title in a rematch to Adesanya, before pursuing — and winning — the UFC’s light heavyweight title.

But should Pereira opt to drop down once more to 185 in pursuit of gold, especially if he does so successfully, it would surely add to the legacy of a career on a fast-track to Hall of Fame status.
