Alex Pereira’s coach Glover Teixeira has said he respects Khamzat Chimaev’s talent but disagrees with aspects of the fighter’s training methods.
Teixeira made the comments while discussing the differences between Pereira’s preparation and that of Chimaev, who has become known for his intense, high-contact sparring sessions. The Brazilian coach, a former UFC light heavyweight champiojn suggested that Chimaev’s approach may be too aggressive and potentially damaging over time.
“I respect Khamzat — he’s a great fighter — but the way he trains, I don’t agree with it,” said Teixeira. “It’s too much. You don’t have to go hard every single day. That’s not how you get better.”
Teixeira, who oversees Pereira’s training camps, contrasted Chimaev’s methods with those of the light heavyweight champion. “Alex works very hard, but he also knows when to rest,” he said. “You need balance — smart training, not just hard training.”
Chimaev, an unbeaten contender at middleweight and welterweight, has often shared footage of gruelling sparring sessions, with some critics suggesting his training style risks injury. Teixeira said that while intensity is important, overdoing it can shorten a fighter’s career.
“In our camp, we believe in longevity,” said Teixeira. “You can’t just beat up everyone in the gym and expect to perform at your best on fight night.”
The comments come as speculation continues about a potential clash between Pereira and Chimaev, a matchup that would pit two of the UFC’s most dominant and physically imposing fighters against each other.
