Daniel Dubois isn’t taking a backward step ahead of his second bid at becoming the first man to defeat Oleksandr Usyk in professional competition.
It was confirmed in recent days that the two heavyweight world champions will meet for a second time on July at London’s Wembley Stadium in a rematch which will come less than two years after the Ukrainian two-division undisputed champion defeated the Briton by late TKO.
However, that bout was not without its own controversy after Usyk was floored by a body shot by Dubois which was ruled as a low blow by the in-ring official.
But now the Londoner will have a chance at revenge in his home city against Usyk, who holds two wins over both Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua as part of his ascent to becoming the heavyweight division’s first undisputed champion this century following his first win over Fury last year.
The two men came face to face in London on Monday and, as you might expect, it was a tense staredown between the two which was eventually punctuated by a Dubois shove which prompted security to race to intervene.
“I’m grateful to God for the opportunity to once again fight for the undisputed championship,” Usyk said of the Dubois showdown. “Thank you, Daniel, for taking care of my IBF belt. Now I want it back.”
Dubois, meanwhile, says that he will prove that he has eclipsed the Ukrainian in the heavyweight ranks when they meet for a second time.
“This is the fight I wanted and demanded and now I get my chance for revenge against Oleksandr Usyk,” said Dubois. “I should have won the first fight and was denied by the judgement of the referee, so I will make no mistake this time around, in front of my people at the national stadium in my home city.”
