Eddie Hearn has said Katie Taylor must headline her expected farewell fight at Croke Park this summer, while ruling out the Dublin venue for a potential Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury bout.
The Matchroom Boxing promoter is due in Dublin on Friday to continue talks over staging what is anticipated to be the final fight of Taylor’s career, following suggestions from Croke Park officials that the stadium could host her swansong alongside a heavyweight clash between Joshua and Fury.
Hearn dismissed that possibility, saying the timing of the proposed heavyweight fight makes Dublin unsuitable. “If this (Joshua v Fury) takes place in November, it won’t be outdoors in Dublin and so therefore we just want to move forward with Katie Taylor,” said Hearn, according to PA.
He also rejected any suggestion that Taylor could appear in a supporting role on such a card. “With all due respect, I don’t think it’s the place to do this fight, either,” Hearn said. “Also, absolutely over my dead body is Katie Taylor going on an undercard at Croke Park,” he added.
Hearn indicated that discussions over Taylor’s fight are progressing, even without a confirmed opponent. “We’ll find out more on Friday. We’re ready to go and are up for doing it. Not necessarily with a finalised opponent, but in terms of the costs and the running of the show,” he said.
Taylor, who turns 40 in July, is expected to retire after one final bout. The Bray native is a former Olympic gold medallist from 2012 and has won world titles across multiple weight divisions during her professional career.
