The New York Athletic Commission has said it is investigating circumstances which affected the outcome of Saturday’s Tank Davis vs. Lamont Roach bout in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The bout, which was ultimately ruled as a majority draw, saw its most controversial moment in the ninth round when the undefeated Davis dropped to one knee in the ring after Roach landed a bout — with Davis later saying that the blow directed some ‘grease’ into his eye from a recent hairstyling that he had received. Dropping to a knee is considered a knockdown under boxing’s accepted ruleset, though referee Steve Willis neglected to rule as such despite initially appearing to start a count.
Had the moment been ruled a knockdown it would have taken a point away from Davis, potentially handing him the first defeat of his career in what would have been a majority decision win for Roach.
And in a statement issued to MMA Fighting, the NYAC said that it is looking into the incident.
“At this time, the New York State Athletic Commission is reviewing the matter involving Saturday’s match up between Lamont Roach and Gervonta Davis,” it said.
“During the round in question, following the commission’s request for the replay video, there was a technical issue preventing the commission from receiving it within the allotted time for review. Therefore, the referee’s in-ring decision was relied upon and the fight continued.
“The commission is dedicated to preserving the integrity of combative sports and is committed to working with all promotions and production teams — on behalf of the athletes, officials, and fans – to ensure technical issues do not occur in the future that prevent the delivery of ringside instant replay feeds to the commission’s officials when needed.”
It remains to be seen if any review will produce a ruling that may retroactively impact the result of the fight. Both men have suggested on social media that they would be open to an immediate rematch.
