The temperature is rising ahead of the third chapter of the Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano rivalry.

The pair, arguably the two finest female boxers in history, will fight for a third time on July 11 inside the global mecca of combat sports, Madison Square Garden, at which multiple-weight world champion Serrano will seek to get one over on Taylor after two closely-contested decision wins for Taylor in their first two fights.

Much of the media narrative surrounding the fight has been centred on disagreements between both camps over the length of the fight and duration of the rounds, with Serrano petitioning for 12 x 3 minute rounds rather than the 10 x 2 minute rounds more often associated with women’s boxing.

But according to Taylor, Serrano is in no position to dictate terms after coming up short in their first two fights.

“I think as a matter of principle that the challenger shouldn’t be dictating the terms of the fight,” Taylor said of the request from the Serrano camp.

“I am 2-0 here and I’m in the driver’s seat here and that’s only right. At the end of the day Amanda needs this fight a lot more than I do. I have a long history of big fights against big names and a line of people queuing up to fight me for the payday.”

For her part, Serrano says that she accepts the decision from Taylor’s reps for the bout to take place under traditional women’s boxing rules — but says that an opportunity to stand on equal footing with the men’s game has been missed.

“If that’s her choice then that’s her choice, but I believe that women should get the recognition and the equality that the men get.”

Former Olympic champion Taylor, 38, will put her light-welterweight titles on the line in the Serrano trilogy bout.
