Ryan Garcia has dismissed Conor Benn as an “average fighter” ahead of the first defence of his WBC welterweight title against the Briton at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Garcia, 28, has repeatedly questioned Benn’s credentials during the build-up to the bout and was accused of overlooking his 29-year-old opponent after skipping Tuesday’s face-off. The American, who is targeting a 26th professional victory in 29 bouts, insists his assessment of Benn has not affected his preparation for the contest.

“Not at all,” said Garcia when asked whether Benn, who has not fought at welterweight since April 2022, deserved a world-title opportunity, according to BBC Sport. “He’s an average fighter, he’s athletic and it’s his last name. It’s not a shot at him; it’s just the bitter truth. I’m preparing like he’s the best fighter in the world. It’s all about preparation and how sharp you are.”

“People could say you’re overlooking him. No, I’m calling it how I see it,” said Garcia. “Do you want me to say he’s as good as Floyd Mayweather? He’s not. He’s alright. He comes forward and throws looping overhands. He’s aggressive and will make him a rugged fight, but it’s not something I haven’t seen before.”

Garcia and Benn will settle their rivalry in Las Vegas on Saturday, with Garcia’s WBC welterweight title at stake. Both fighters have documented their preparations on social media, although Benn has largely posted footage of his training while Garcia has mixed his fight-camp content with influencer collaborations and appearances in WWE.

“He’s not my cup of tea. I wouldn’t want to hang out with him too much,” said Garcia. “He’s a bit of a hypocrite and contradicts himself a lot. I am who I am – goofy and outgoing, making jokes and having fun. He is trying to say he’s humble, but he’s out here any chance in a Rolls Royce. He loves the lights. He thinks I’m like that, but I’m focused on my craft 100%.”
