Chris Eubank Jr has little left to achieve in his career and should step away from boxing, according to former WBA world champion George Groves.

Eubank Jr emerged with a four-round decision win over heated rival Conor Benn in an instant classic last weekend, after which he was taken to hospital after an apparent orbital injury following the 12-round war.

A rematch between the two has been linked to September, once again in London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium — but Groves, who holds a win over Eubank Jr — says that the 35-year-old has little left to achieve and should consider hanging up the gloves.

“No, I don’t think a rematch. No rematch. They had the fight. It was as big as it could have been,” Groves said to Sky Sports. “I think Eubank should retire.

“Eubank got the win. But I think he went straight to hospital and didn’t come home till Monday morning. So I think he should leave his career there. I think Eubank should retire.

“His best days are way gone. Way past him. But he’s had a massive night. He’s had a great payday. He’s had a moment with his father. He’s scratched that itch. Maybe if he never had the Benn fight, it would always be ‘what if I had the Benn fight’.”

The trouble is, there appears to be another large payday ahead for both fighters — as well as links to another bonanza fight against Canelo Alvarez for Eubank Jr.

But Groves, who fought rival Carl Froch twice before retiring following a loss to Callum Smith, says he should follow him in making his boxing exit.

“There’s no other fights out there for him that will get near it. Don’t have the rematch. Therefore I think he should retire.”
