Chantelle Cameron has been installed as the new WBC light-welterweight world champion following Katie Taylor decision to take a break from the sport following her third successive win over rival Amanda Serrano this past July.

The Briton, who is the only fighter to have defeated Taylor in professional competition, steps up from interim champion status after Taylor was named “champion in recess” by the boxing governing body, which means that the Bray native will be awarded a title bout if and when she returns to activity.

Taylor and Cameron shared a two-fight series on 2023, with each winning one fight. Cameron’s loss to Taylor in their second fight in November 2023 remains the sole loss on her professional record.

A trilogy bout between the two had been mandated by the WBC but Taylor instead opted to take a break from the sport. It is expected that the 8-3-1 Sandy Ryan will be Cameron’s first opponent as the new champ.

“Looking forward to making more moves in my career with a great team and the future is looking bright,” Cameron said in a statement posted to social media.

Speculation will now likely increase that the 39-year-old Taylor may opt to hang up her gloves after one of the most successful careers in the history of the sport.

Her promoter, Eddie Hearn, said recently that he expects clarity on this over the coming months — but confirmed that she will not fight again in 2025.

“She’s definitely not going to fight again this year or early next year so in her head right now, she’s going to have Christmas and I don’t think she’ll make an actual decision this year because time will enable you to make a decision, so give yourself time,” Hearn said.

“How you feel today will probably be very different to how she feels in January or February. The worst thing to do is to retire and then in January go ‘I think I’ll have another fight’.”
