A month out from scoring arguably the most satisfying win of his career with a first-round submission win against King Green at the UFC 304 in Manchester, Paddy Pimblett knows who he wants next.
Liverpool’s Pimblett, now 6-0 in the UFC (22-3 overall), jumped into the UFC lightweight division’s top 15 with his victory against Octagon veteran Green in late July — a position which all but guarantees his an opportunity to further ascend the rankings ladder in his bout.
Pimblett has made no secret of the fact that he is targeting the 19-5-1 Brazilian Renato Moicano (ranked 11th) in his next matchup; a fighter who has won five of his past six in the talent-rich 155-pound fold, and someone the Englishman believes could help propel him in the direction of a title shot.
“I think I’m gonna move up the rankings anyway because [Rafael] dos Anjos has said he won’t fight at lightweight again, and he’s gonna fight welterweight from now on. So probably gonna get moved up to 14,” Pimblett told Action Network.
“I think it’d be a fun fight for everyone involved. We’d end up having a good fight. Yeah. If it was up to me, it’s Moicano. It’s a good scrap,” he added.
However, former Cage Warriors champion Pimblett also stated that he would happily accept an opponent a bit higher up the rankings — such as Dan Hooker, who recently scored a big win against Mateusz Gamrot.
“I’ll just keep fighting and winning. If I get offered Dan Hooker I’ll take it. Jump right up to rank 5, and then it probably will be in a title eliminator next,” he said. “So, yeah, I’m game for any of them. As I say, any name gets sent to me, that’s all sound. I’m not shying away from fighting anyone.”
